Commercial Litigation, Arbitration and International Experience

Business litigation lawyer Joseph M. Matthews joined our litigation law firm in 1989 after more than a decade as a named partner in one of the premier boutique business law firms in Miami. He built his reputation trying business and commercial litigation and arbitration, including contract and insurance disputes, fraud, defamation and professional liability. The 2011 edition of Best Lawyers in America© selected Joe in the categories of Bet-the-Company Litigation and Commercial Litigation. Before joining the firm, Joe served as Special Counsel to U.S. Senator Bob Graham.

Joe sees arbitration as a natural extension of our firm’s increasingly diverse and sophisticated business trial work. Serving as an advocate before an arbitration panel requires the same depth of legal knowledge and skills as arguing before a judge or jury, but also requires sensitivity to the unique nature of arbitration. Recognizing that globalization has caused an explosion in business disputes among parties from multiple countries that require the ability to handle arbitration as well as litigation, Colson Hicks Eidson opened a Washington DC office to better serve clients facing international commercial and investment treaty arbitration cases.

Joe has served as arbitrator or advocate in more than 175 cases in the U.S. and around the world. These arbitrations have involved a wide range of subjects from international and domestic business, contract and securities disputes to construction, insurance, healthcare and fraud conflicts. Joe is a past member of the board of directors of the American Arbitration Association and its affiliate, the International Centre for Dispute Resolution. He served as a member of the executive committee of the board of those organizations.

Committed to Continuing Education

Joe is committed to education and innovation in the legal profession. He is a sought-after lecturer on technology, trial skills, arbitration and ethics, presenting at conferences from local to international venues. He was also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Miami, School of Law and has taught at universities in the United Kingdom, China and Mongolia. Joe’s recent speech to the Bar Council of the Republic of Ireland regarding the impact of disruptive technology on trial practice can be seen on YouTube. His Dean’s address to the International Academy of Trial Lawyers can be seen on the International Academy of Trial Lawyers website.

As a volunteer, Joe served as Chairman of the YMCA of Greater Miami and was honored as “Volunteer of the Year” in 1997. He also was a Trustee of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce.
