According to USA Today, on December 5, authorities say one child died and four others were injured when a dump truck collided with a school bus carrying elementary school students in Kuna, Idaho. The Canyon County Coroner confirmed that the 11-year-old boy died of blunt force trauma sustained in the crash.
The school bus was transporting 12 children to an elementary school when it collided with a dump truck at a rural intersection. Authorities say the dump truck was traveling north on a two-lane country road, when the truck driver approached the four-way intersection with no stop sign. The school bus was traveling east toward the same intersection, which did have a stop sign.
Four children were taken to the hospital with injuries, and the bus driver was taken to a hospital for emotional distress. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office says all the kids were 6th graders or younger.
Though the temperatures were below freezing, the roads were dry and not covered in ice at the intersection. Idaho State Police Sergeant John Burke stated that it is too early to determine what caused the fatal collision.
“We can’t really speculate. We need to gather more information and continue the investigation,” Burke told USA Today.
