Are Older Truck Drivers Putting You In Danger?

Did you know that there is a truck driver shortage? According to some estimates, around 48,000 truck drivers are needed to fill seats at trucking companies. And since almost 70 percent of the country’s goods are shipped by truck, a shortage like this could spell disaster for the economy. So how are shipping companies making up for this shortage? They are hiring older truck drivers, and that might be putting you in danger on the road. Could Older Truck Drivers Be Too Dangerous for the Open Road? Why Does An Aviation Bill Have Rules About Truckers?

The laws of 22 states require truckers to rest and take meal breaks more frequently than the federal government’s minimum standards. Considering that fatigue is one of the leading causes of truck-related accidents, it is actually surprising that more states don’t have laws like this, but the trucking industry is taking action to make sure other states don’t make trucker rest laws. How Is The Trucking Industry Fighting Driver Fatigue Laws? Back in December, a provision in a massive transportation bill was taken out. The provision would have made federal regulations preempt tougher state regulations built to prevent trucker fatigue. This provision had come about after the trucking industry challenged the authority of state laws in court, but that attempt to dodge state law was defeated then as it was in December. However, the trucking industry has not given up. Why Does An Aviation Bill Have Rules About Truckers? A…

Chain-Reaction Crash Proves Fatal

Just north of Miami, a truck carrying concrete barriers pulled out of a construction zone and merged onto Interstate 75. After joining traffic the truck was hit by a Mitsubishi car that got lodged under the rig and dragged almost a quarter of a mile down the road. While still in motion, another car, a white BMW, hit the trailer of the big truck and concrete barriers toppled on top of it. Before the scene could settle, another truck ran into the crippled 18-wheeler, and finally brought this chain-reaction crash to an end. The driver of the Mitsubishi, an aspiring doctor who just passed the United States Medical Licensing Exam, did not survive the crash, and his passenger was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the BMW, a 17-year-old who had just graduated from American Heritage High School in Plantation, also passed when the concrete…
