Diagnosing Cancer Caused By Allergan Breast Implants

There are various reasons that women choose to get breast implants. One thing they should never have to worry about is an FDA-approved, clinically tests implant causing them cancer. Unfortunately, we know that the textured breast implants made by Allergan have been recalled for that exact reason. At Colson Hicks Eidson, our nationally-recognized firm is working to help those who have been affected by this product. Today, we want to discuss the continuing stress women are facing due to Allergan’s implants, particularly with diagnosing their cancer.

Allergan breast implants are causing long-term distress

By now, many people are aware that textured breast implants made by Allergan have been recalled and are no longer sold. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerted the public earlier this year that these implants have been known to cause breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). This is not breast cancer. Rather, BIA-ALCL is cancer associated with the scar tissue and fluid surrounding the implant.

While treatment of this cancer is usually successful with surgical removal of the implant, many women are having trouble receiving a proper diagnosis. This is leaving those who have Allergan textured implants scared and anxious. It is also leaving them at risk of developing advanced-stage cancer.

One woman says that “I had to notify them of the recall, I had to notify them what type of tests I need done…I had to tell them about what BIA-ALCL is.”

Doctors seem to be unaware of the recall. More than that, they seem to be unaware that BIA-ALCL exists. Even though researchers began to link this cancer with textured breast implants in 2011, the recall did not happen until 2019. Eight women who have been diagnosed with BIA-ALCL told BuzzFeed News that their doctors never mentioned any potential cancer risk when they underwent the implant procedure.

How can a patient make health decisions without knowing the known risks associated with a procedure? What do patients do when doctors do not know about certain risks, even though they should have?

“I had my breasts taken out for cancer. I didn’t want to put cancer back in,” said one woman seeking treatment.
