General Motors Recalls 3.4 Million Vehicles

You should always be able to count on your vehicle being safe when you get behind the wheel. However, over the last few years, we have been inundated with news of vehicle recalls. At Colson Hicks Eidson, we understand these cases and are nationally recognized for our work in product liability law. If you or a loved one has been injured due to a defective vehicle or vehicle part, please seek legal assistance. Today, our Miami product liability attorneys want to talk about the most recent major auto recall.

What is behind this latest recall?

We have learned that General Motors has recalled more than 3.4 million big trucks and SUVs in the US due to a problem with the brakes. The recall comes after the GM received pressure from the government.

In November of last years, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NTSB) began investigating a problem with the brakes in some of GM’s largest vehicles. GM states that as the pump in the power assist brakes can put out less vacuum power than needed as it ages. This can increase stopping distances as well as the chance of a crash.

Affected vehicles include the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks from 2014 to 2018. Also included are the Cadillac Escalade from 2015 to 2017, as well as the GMC Yukon, Chevy Suburban, and the Chevy Tahoe from 2015 to 2018.

Consumers affected can bring their vehicles to the dealership to have the electronic brake control module recalibrated at no-cost.

The NTSB had nine reports of crashes that had caused two injuries when they began the investigation. GM says that the problem rarely occurs, and when it does it is when the vehicle is driving at low speeds.

Recalls are not uncommon

You should always check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website for the latest vehicle recalls ensuring you are safe. There, you can enter your vehicle’s VIN number to ensure and see a list of all recalls associated with the vehicle.

Vehicles crashes are the leading cause of injuries and fatalities in the US. While most are caused by driver errors, many are caused by defects that should have been noticed by the vehicle’s manufacturer.
