No Bike Accidents On Pineda: Is Florida Becoming Safer For Bicyclists?

It was controversial when first proposed, and drivers insisted that people were going to get hurt if the Florida Legislature moved forward with its plan, but so far, opening bike lanes on the Pineda Causeway has not been the disaster everyone feared. No Bike Accidents On The Pineda Causeway A study performed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has revealed that during its first 19 months of operation, the Pineda Causeway bike lanes have seen no bike crashes. From March 2013 through February 2015 there have been 95 crashes involving of every other type of vehicle on the causeway, but bicycles have remained safe while riding over the bridge. The Pineda Causeway was part of a two-year pilot program that included two other Miami-Dade County causeways and tested whether allowing bikes on these bridges was safe. Bike Thieves At Large: Do You Know How To Protect Your Bike?

Security cameras recently caught a man breaking into the locked parking garage of a local Coral Gables condo. The man first inspects a bunch of cars and then pulls out a pair of bolt cutters and steals several bikes instead. Now the police want you to know that there are even more bike thieves at large, and they have tips on how to protect your bike. “What we’re hearing from our detectives is that they’re pawning the bikes… taking them out of our city through various means of transportation,” Officer Kelly Denham tells Local 10 News. Wearing Bike Safety Gear — Nonprofit Makes Biking Safer For Coral Gables

The popularity of bicycling in Florida is rising faster than most of our cities can keep pace with. With the explosion of new cyclists, city planners are scrambling to improve safety measures, which is important considering our state has one of the worst bicycling safety records. However, city officials are not the only people working on the problem as a local nonprofit tries to make wearing bike safety gear the new trend all over the state. The Bicycle Action Committee (BAC) has been selling biking apparel with city seals on them. The jerseys and shorts have seals from Aventura, Sunny Isles Beach, Miami Beach, South Miami, Miami, Doral, Pincrest, Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, and our own Coral Gables.
