Colson Hicks Eidson and Meister Law Secure $20.3 Million Jury Verdict Against Royal Caribbean Cruises

Following a Three Week Trial, Miami Jury Finds RCCL 100 Percent Negligent for Crewmember Injury CORAL GABLES, Fla. (June 1, 2018) — Attorneys Deborah J. Gander and Susan S. Carlson of Coral Gables-based Colson Hicks Eidson and Tonya J. Meister of Miami-based Meister Law received a $20.3 million verdict in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit in Miami Dade County against Royal Caribbean Cruises LTD on behalf plaintiff Lisa Spearman, an officer who was severely injured while working aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. Following a three week trial, the jury returned the verdict in favor of the plaintiff finding Royal Caribbean Cruises was negligent and 100 percent liable for the injuries caused to the plaintiff, absolving Spearman of any possible fault. How Did a Little Boy Drown Aboard a Cruise Line?

It was a normal launching for the passengers and crew aboard Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas cruise ship. The ship left port at around 4:30 pm on June 30th. At 5:30, the crew announced the ship would be heading back to port. There had been an incident, and it would change one family’s lives forever. How Did a Little Boy Drown Aboard A Cruise Line? Anthem of the Seas crew members discovered an 8-year-old boy in one of the ship’s pools. They estimated the boy had been in the pool for around 8-10 minutes, but at the time, he was unresponsive. The crew administered CPR and established a pulse. Then an NYPD helicopter came to the ship and transported the boy to the nearest hospital. The boy spent two days in intensive care. When there is an outbreak of sickness on a cruise ship, the massive boat is usually docked and washed from stem to stern. Often solvents and disinfectants are used liberally on every surface, but a new study questions whether these procedures are working. A study out of the Universite Laval, in Canada, has revealed that Norovirus might be transmittable by air. Norovirus is commonly called the “stomach flu,” even though the flu virus isn’t a part of the illness. The virus causes symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever. Norovirus is also commonly known to strike on cruises, and ruins vacations for countless people every year. The study’s leader hopes their findings can help change how people deal with these outbreaks. “In light of our results, these rules need to be reviewed to take into account the possibility of airborne transmission of noroviruses,” she says.
