What is a surgical error? There can be many surgical errors. For example, I’ll tell you about a case I handled recently where a young woman, a police officer, a very healthy woman, a very active woman, went in because she had some abdominal issues. They did an abdominal surgery on her and after the surgery she started to complain that her stomach was extended.

The doctor sloughed it off as being part of the surgery and expected. After about a month of this, she started to get sick. She was entered into the hospital. She became sicker and sicker. Finally, [the hospital] did an exploratory surgery and realized that this particular surgeon had left an 18 x 28 inch surgical towel in this lady’s abdomen. The towel had been left in her abdomen so long that it caused catastrophic personal injuries, which resulted in her being disabled for the rest of her life.
